Cotton Fabric’s ability to get sterilized makes Lingerie made out of Cotton a wonderful choice for Lactating mothers. Hello, this is Tushar Bhatia from Charu Creation Pvt Ltd., a fashion fabric company from Nehru Place, New Delhi. Friends, before going in detail about the different woven fabrics used for making Lingerie, let us first of all understand the exact definition of Lingerie. Lingerie constitutes not only women’s undergarments but also women’s night suits. Lingerie is manufactured all around the world using woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, non-woven fabrics & Laces. Let us talk about Woven fabrics used for making Lingerie. So the first on the list is Cotton. Fabrics made out of Cotton Fibers are immensely breathable and helps you stay cool even when it is very humid. This is one of the primary reasons why cotton is a perfect choice for lingerie making. Another advantage of cotton is that it is hypoallergenic and, therefore, suitable for women with sensitive skin. Cotton fabric is also popular because it’s easy to care for. Cotton is easy to clean, can be machine washed, laundered or dry cleaned. It can resist high temperatures, therefore it can be boiled and thus sterilized.
Cotton Fabric’s ability to get sterilized makes Lingerie made out of Cotton a wonderful choice for Lactating mothers. But it has a downside also. Cotton absorbs moisture and will stay dry as long as the moisture evaporates faster than the material can absorb it. For that reason, it’s not the best material for sport or those who sweat a lot. So friends, the first fabric made out of Cotton fiber that you can choose for making Lingerie is Cotton Voile. Lightweight and transparent in nature, Cotton Voile is widely used to make lightweight summer lingerie, such as nighties, lightweight bralettes that don’t require stretch, or boxer shorts. Printed Cotton Voile can make beautiful panel insertions when combined with stretch fabrics in bras and panties.
Moreover, most linings of bras are made from Cotton Voile. The next fabric that you may use for making your Lingerie is Cotton Cambric. A fine woven fabric with a plain weave, Cotton Cambric is a good fabric for nursing bras, maternity bras, and daily panties because of its high moisture absorption ability and breathability feature. The next fabric that you may think about is Cotton Sateen. Woven out of Satin weave, it is incredibly soft to touch. And even though it has a matt finish, the fabric is smooth and feels a delight against the skin. It drapes elegantly, and would be ideal to make a classy chemise or cute pyjama set.
100% Cotton Fabrics are not stretchable and certain items of Lingerie do require a certain amount of stretch. For this particular reason, cotton is blended with spandex. Cotton-Spandex blended fabric combines the breathability and moisture absorption ability of cotton and the high elasticity and intensity of spandex. Bras made from the cotton-spandex fabric are especially comfortable as everyday-wear when you just need the minimum amount of stretch.
This fabric is less prone to shrinkage compared to cotton and having a few bras handy, made from cotton-spandex, helps take care of those days when you don’t have time to put together an attire let alone sort out your lingerie. Friends, you may now order fabrics from our Android Mobile App named Charu Creation. To download our App from Playstore, click on the link given in the description of the video. Okay, so lets get back to fabrics.
The second major fiber for is Silk. Silk, a kind of protein fiber, is honored as “Fiber Queen” for its unique properties. Silk is most known for its lustrous finish, rich colors due to high dye absorption, and incredibly soft feel. Despite its delicacy, silk is a very strong fiber. The first woven fabric made out of Silk that you can use for making Lingerie is Silk Impression. It is a demure fabric that’s perfect for lingerie making as it’s both incredibly lightweight and durable. Having a GSM of around 80, it almost feels weightless, effortlessly gliding over your skin without any friction. The front and back textures are the same, It has a shimmery face and is semi-translucent, producing an elegant, slightly faded print. Therefore, it’s one of the best fabrics for Lingerie items such as panties, nighties and babydolls.
The second woven Silk fabric for
Lingerie making is Silk Charmeuse. It is one of the most luxurious fabrics to wear near the skin. It has a satin weave that gives it a high shine and almost liquid appearance. It’s been popular in lingerie since the early 20th century, and is still used consistently in high end lingerie. The third woven fabric made out of Silk is a blend of Silk Charmeuse and Spandex. Popularly called as Stretch Silk Charmeuse, it is often used for making special occasion designer bras. The next woven Silk fabric on our list is China silk also called as Silk Habotai. More commonly used as a lining fabric, china silk can be a relatively inexpensive choice for Lingerie item such as slips. It’s smooth next to the body and very thin, so it does not add bulk. The next on our list is Crepe de Chine. Also called Chinese Silk Crepe, this Crepe fabric has the flow of other silk fabrics such as silk charmeuse, but without the high shine. Crepe is dull and textured, so it does not show every lump and bump on the body the way a satin finish does. Silk crepe makes luxurious loungewear, pajamas, robes, slips, and nighties. Now let’s talk about another woven Silk fabric, Silk Organza: Organza is a magical silk fabric that is both light and sheer, yet stiff and strong. It tends to stand away from the body and creates volume.
While this stiffness is not ideal for most comfortable lingerie, organza makes a perfect interfacing when you don’t want to add a lot of bulk and don’t want any stretch. Having a touch of sparkle, Organza is a beautiful fabric for adding decorative notes to your lingerie. Add shaped motifs that subtly catch the light, or why not add a petticoat layer to your babydoll? The next 2 woven Silk fabrics you may use are Silk Chiffon and Silk Georgette: These sheer fabrics are incredibly light, flowing, and delicate. Silk Chiffon is the lighter of the two, and has an ethereal quality. Layers of chiffon can be used to build up different colors and tones within a garment. Silk Georgette is similar, but has more texture and opacity. They make lovely kimonos, or can form a sheer skirt on a nightie. Friends, let us now talk about woven fabrics made out of synthetic fibers.
The first on the list is Polyester. Polyester is the most common synthetic fiber. It is heat and colour resistant, dries quickly, doesn’t crease and shrinks less than for example cotton fibers. Polyester is also more elastic than cotton. It is more durable and is often used in functional Lingerie such as sports bras since it doesn’t hold moisture. Polyester fibers wick moisture away from the body but instead of it being absorbed by the material it evaporates. The result is that the material feels dry. When polyester is dyed, the fibers hold their colour better than for example cotton, which can fade when it’s washed. Polyester fiber is versatile and can be made into a wide variety of different woven fabrics such as Polyester satin, Polyester Georgette, Polyester Chiffon, Polyester Crepe etc. However, there are also some downsides to Polyester fabrics. They burl easily. Another popular synthetic fibre used in Lingerie especially Panties is polyamide, also called Nylon. It is one of the strongest of all raw textile fibers, even when it’s wet, and is much more elastic than natural fibres. It is easy to look after, rarely creases and doesn’t burl unlike polyester and cotton. It feels soft against the skin, is breathable and has good resistance against moisture and sebum. It is more resistant to moisture than polyester but takes longer to dry.
Both nylon and polyester are widely used in the production of sports bras. If you do a little research on this, you will find that most sports bras are made of 90% nylon + 10% spandex, or 90% Polyester + 10% spandex fabrics. A small proportion of spandex fibres is blended with the fabrics to improve the
elasticity. Nowadays, a blended fabric made out of 69% Nylon, 18% elastane & 13% polyester is widely being used for making sports bras. However for making common bras, cotton fibers are blended with polyester or Nylon or both. In this way, those blended fabrics could retain the wear resistance and intensity of synthetic fibers and also the breathable and hygroscopic properties of natural fibers. Friends, last on our list are semi-synthetic fabrics like Modal & Lyocell also called Tencel. Both Modal and Lyocell are made from regenerated cellulosic fibres. Both are extremely soft against the skin. Nowadays, premium panties and pyjamas are made from Modal and Lyocell fabrics.
